Reading transits without the fear

A transit is simply where a planet is right now compared with where it was at your birth. Nothing is being done to you. What a transit describes is a period during which a particular kind of work is unusually available — and unusually hard to avoid.

Slow planets matter, fast planets don't

The Moon changes sign every two and a half days. Anything it triggers passes before you can respond to it. Mercury, Venus and Mars are worth noting for scheduling. The transits that describe chapters of a life are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, because they stay in aspect for months or years.

If a horoscope tells you today is pivotal because the Moon squares something, ignore it. If Saturn is sitting on your Sun for eighteen months, pay attention.

The Saturn return is a job, not a punishment

Around ages twenty-nine and fifty-eight, Saturn comes back to where it began in your chart. The reputation is grim; the mechanism is not. Saturn tests structures. Whatever in your life is held together by momentum, other people's expectations or a story you no longer believe tends to come apart — because it was already apart, and Saturn only removes the scaffolding.

People who go into it having already audited their commitments generally describe it as demanding and clarifying. People who go into it defending arrangements they privately resent describe it as brutal. The transit is the same.

Mercury retrograde is a proofreading window

Three or four times a year Mercury appears to move backward. Contracts, travel and communication get blamed. The useful reading is narrower: it is a poor window for finalising and a good one for reviewing. Send the email; just read it twice. Sign the lease if you must; have someone else check the dates.

Two questions to ask of any transit

First: which house is it moving through? That tells you the department — finances, partnership, home, public role. Second: what is it touching in the natal chart? That tells you which part of you is being asked to change.

A transit through an empty house with no aspects is usually quiet. A transit making an exact aspect to your Moon is not, whatever house it occupies.

Write the date down

The most useful thing anyone can do with transit knowledge is keep a log. Note the transit, note what happened, note how you responded. After two years you will have your own empirical astrology, which is worth more than any interpretation someone else wrote — including this one.
